Read short messages or surfing the Internet via smartphone tend to force their eyes to work harder than when reading books or newspapers. The study involved 130 volunteers, average age 23.3 years, how they hold the phone while reading a short message. Then, another 100 volunteers, average age 24.9 years studied while they read the pages.

When we read newspapers, books, or the print magazine, the average distance to the eye is 40.64 inches. Apparently the average person to read or send short messages is only 35.56 inches. In some people even closer than 17.78 centimeters. Research by a team from SUNY State College of Optometry in New York City states that the additional burden it would cause complaints such as headaches, dry eyes, discomfort, myopic, and tension in the eyes. The results are published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science in July 2011 issue.
